Open Question: A guy friend of mine likes me and I don't like him back.?

A pal of mine for years now thinks he's "in adore" with me- we work together and are both freelance artists and he's helped me receive a lot of work as well (he's a good 10 years older than me and has been in this business for longer), however, I've been in a relationship for the last three years that ended a few months ago. I always viewed his crush harmless, until now-- it seemed as though he expected to be the "next in line," and that I "owe" him for helping me with my work. However, it's difficult for me to wrap my mind around the idea that he could have been lying in wait this entire time. Anyway, i've told him multiple times that I am not romantically interested in him but I truly value his friendship and I wish that he is not around me for ulterior motives. Everything was fine until I expressed interested in another guy and then he (my pal with the crush) clip off every contact with me. WTF??? Did I do something wrong? How can I rectify my friendship with him? Do I even want to? I feel a little guilty since my career is taking off a little and I have him to thank for it... Advice anyone?

Open Question: I need girlfriend advice?

I have been on and off with a girl for 7 years and when we were about 3 years into the relationship I chose to follow her to the college she was going to (in hopes of keeping the relationship alive). Well anyway from the start she didn't spend as much time with me as I would have wanted and we started arguing and fighting every the time... she ended up dumping me and clip off every contact with me for about a month. I moved back home (about an hour away) and went to community college for a year while starting to talk to her again and we patched things up. I made the 2 hour roundtrip steer hundreds of times to look her, she never came back to look me once. I completed community college and decided that I was going to go to the college I had wanted to go to since I was 5 which was 1200 miles away. I figured we were already long distance so it wouldnt have mattered. We weren't going out when I left but she didn't want to receive back together either. Since I left my grades have gone up, I built a successful business, and adore the weather out here. In every the time I've been out here, she hasn't arrive to look me once and refuses to. She also is telling me she'll never leave her family and move out of state. I told her thats fine but I'm not moving to where she lives again to receive dumped again by her. The problem is she still texts me every the time to look what I'm doing, she always says she wants to talk but every she says is the same thing that she isn't going to leave and I should just deal with it. What do you think I should do?

Open Question: College essay topic...!?

Hi, My school wants us to start thinking about our essay for college next year over the summer. I was thinking for my college essay topic I could write about overcoming my fear of public speaking. I want to show colleges that I can overcome challenges and I don't let anything stand in my way. Only thing I am worried about is that I feel like many applicants might write about a topic like this. How can I write my essay with a unique approach? I want to major in business and I know communication and public speaking are essential in that area so that is why I want to write my essay on overcoming my fear. When I was in 9th grade, I had to research a famous person and gift it to the class. The other students would vote on who they thought had the most interesting person and who presented the best. I was chosen, so then I had to gift my project to the whole grade. I did Oprah Winfrey by the way. This was the first time I spoke in front of about 400 people and after presenting, I realized that there was nothing to be afraid of. Of course I'm going to add more details and write better. but would this be a good topic to write about? Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks ! :)

Open Question: Keeping the states out of the federal government's business?

One of the arguments against the recent Arizona illegal immigrant law is that a State must not do the Federal governments job. (Can we every agree that the legislation is not ADDING a crime, it is just enforcing laws on the books that are not being enforced?) Here is my question. Liberals. If this is the reason you are opposed to this law can you tell me why you are so against issues that are the reverse? Meaning.. you want Health care nationalized while it is obvious that a STATE can do that without any help, the same is true about education, welfare, housing, food stamps etc. I would be glad to side with you on this.. if you will also bring every the liberal causes YOU push down to the state level where they freaking belong. Let the federal government be LIMITED!!!! What the freak is so difficult about this. Lets keep this huge government tiny.. i mean.. you guys hated GWB but you are giving the next president that you like a TON more power so.. what.. the NEXT GWB will have every that power too? Are you liberals INSANE? Conservatives too, we did it with Bush. its time to clip the bahls off the federal government before we every choke on them. Cause folks.. they are shoving those smelly things down our throats.

Open Question: Questions for supporters of prayer in schools, teaching the "controversy," etc.?

Do you have principles? Or, if not principles, do you have the slightest peripheral notion that people exist in America that believe differently than you do? I ask because it would seem that, if you had either of these, you would soon realize that your persistent campaign to Christianize America makes no sense. It is not only a display of utter contempt toward the Constitutional principles on which our country is founded, but it is also one of the most shockingly narrow-minded, shamelessly hypocritical ideological movements ever bred in this country. This latter point may arrive as a surprise. Hypocrisy is not a common charge against your group (being, as there are, plenty of more obvious ones to pick from), but there can be no doubt that your rhetoric reeks with it. So far I have not heard a single convincing argument (and, for that matter, very few arguments at every) to the point that you have the executive privilege to enforce your religious interpretations by law. And yet, on the oft-chanted yet never-proved basis that America was founded as a "Christian nation," you hijack our legislature, our court system, and even our schools, and conform them to your image until you've done every but establish a state religion. So, to prevent my "question" from turning into a rant, I want to propose a hypothetical situation, and then follow it with a question I've wanted to know the answer to for quite some time. --- Suppose that the Anti-Defamation League lobbied members of Congress to pass a bill mandating the closure of every businesses from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset, with an earmarked ban on pork sales. The force behind the proposed bill would be the widely-lamented absence of traditional Jewish values in American culture, where non-kosher foods are regularly consumed without pause and synagogues have had to close due to needy attendance. Against every expectations, the bill would pass through both houses, and receive signed into law by the president. --- Would you complain? And if you would, then why do you turn a deaf ear when non-Christians complain about you doing essentially the same thing?

Open Question: How to advertise for a musical album online?

I am a web developer and I was hired by The pal of my cousin to advertise for her album online. Now I know how to advertise for my websites and it's easy because if I fail, it's okay, but now i'm advertising for another person and that's called responsibility. So far I am managing a group for her on Facebook and I created a group to her as well, I am the one who uploads her video clips on youtube and I'm managing her account as well, I'll be advertising for her on twitter and i'll put ads on facebook. And I will be creating a website for her soon. Is there something more I can do to let the people know about her new album? And could you give me a complete plan (possibly a link ) to tell me how to advertise for an album online? Advertising on radio and tv is not my business, I'm responsible for letting people know of her new album which will be available in 2 weeks, and she's not american and doesn't sing in english so don't ask for her name, she's a new singer.

Open Question: My family is not supportive?

I'm 38 and the youngest of three girls. My family has never reallysupported me in things, even when I was little. I've been laid off two different jobs in the past three years because of the economy. I'm the most independent of every of my sisters. I've had to go to my mom and my dad, who are both financially stable (who are divorced) for money for rent etc..both were very degrading and told me no. My sisters refused to help also. I got laid off last year and I didn't tell anyone and they found out and then asked why I didn't tell them. I explained it wasn't their business. They said they would have wanted to know, that they didn't care if I wasn't working, but not to ask them for money. My dad has always said, "If you can't depend on your family, who can you depend on?" So, I'm trying to make a final decision if I should even go to holidays and birthdays. What's the point? They're not caring enough to help their possess. Any suggestions?

Open Question: Why do Democrats want to give away more money? Isn't it yet clear that redistribution of wealth doesn't work?

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0710/40411.html Efforts to provide relief to the nation's struggling tiny businesses stalled in the Senate Thursday, prompting a bitter round of finger-pointing on a measure that once had broad bipartisan support. The bill, which would create a $30 billion Treasury-backed loan facility and provide tax cuts for tiny businesses worth $12 billion over 10 years, failed to break a GOP-led filibuster on a 58-42 vote. For weeks, Republicans have pressed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to open the door for a series of amendments. But Democrats have balked, saying the amendments in question are not germane to the issue on the floor. With a week until the August recess, Democrats are eager to clear the bill and tout an accomplishment before moving onto a packed floor schedule in the coming days. But the impasse ensures that the two sides will continue haggling over whether to move forward with the bill or drop it altogether before moving onto other business, including an energy bill and Elena Kagan’s Supreme Court nomination. "My frustration is pretty high," Reid said on the floor. His comments came after Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), who for weeks has been pushing the measure, lambasted Democrats for not giving the GOP a chance to amend it. "We could have addressed this issue long before now, give it the attention it deserves rather than treating it as a mere afterthought in the legislative process that we've got to ram in there and deny the minority the opportunity to offer a few amendments," the usually staid Maine moderate thundered on the floor. Moments before the vote was about to be called, Reid tried to clip a deal: Allow the GOP to offer three amendments and kill disaster and agriculture relief funding. But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said three GOP amendments would not be enough, though he sounded optimistic that a deal could be reached later. "I think we're getting closer," McConnell said. "I think there's a chance we may be able to make some significant progress very soon. In the meantime ... the leader and I can continue to try to unsnarl this." But Reid shot back: "There's nothing to unsnarl." Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), an architect of the bill, pressed McConnell on the precise number of amendments his side would be satisfied with. But McConnell punted. "That is the sort of thing that the majority leader and I work on every day, ... and we ought to do that." Pressed further, McConnell called for regular order, prompting the cloture vote to start and effectively cutting off the Louisiana Democrat. At the middle of the deal making is Sen. George LeMieux, the Republican from Florida, whose economically distressed home state includes a host of banks and tiny businesses pushing for the bill. While he supports the measure, LeMieux said that he's trying to help both sides reach an accommodation. "It sure would be a shame if it didn't receive done," LeMieux said after the vote. LeMieux also disputed Reid’s suggestions on the floor that he would vote for cloture if the disaster money were removed and said it’s largely up to the majority leader to receive the bill passed. “The keys to the kingdom are in Harry Reid’s pocket.” Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0710/40411.html#ixzz0vB8SL8g6

Open Question: What political party would you say I am?

I'm only 15, but I still have some strong views on things such as politics. So anywhooo, I will start with my opinion on gays and gay marriage. I think that it should definitely be allowed, and I have absolutely no problem with gays and lesbians. A person's sex should not matter, as long as you are in adore. And how would it even effect other straight couples?? It's not like everyone is going to turn gay or anything "horrible"..... Sorry I just hate it when people are so against homosexuals. As for taxes and government, I think they need to keep out of everyone's business. They should only take care of necessary things, like defense and maintaining a decent environment... And of course, taxes are necessary for education, because without it how are we going to go about life if no one can afford it. I think that taxing the wealthy is BS, because after every, most wealthy people work difficult for their money and are successful. That shouldn't be taken away from them just because a bunch of people are so lazy that they would rather have the government pay them instead of going and actually getting a job. Sure, some people need money because of severe health problems, but a majority of them really don't and are just greedy. As for abortion, I think it should be allowed for if someone were raped and not ready to take on the life as a mom. But anyway, if someone were stupid enough to not protect themselves and receive pregnant, and decide to receive an abortion, that's not my problem. I don't like it, but it's their choice for what they pick to do to themselves. Same goes for prostitution and drugs. I look down on it, but again, it's their choice if they want to mess up their life. Don't receive me wrong, I still think it should be regulated by the law. Oh and I believe that people should be able to pay for healthcare themselves. I want the least bit of government as possible. By the way, how similar are conservative and libertarians? My dad is a conservative, and I agree with some views that he has, but also have some different opinions. I should mention that I took a test in Civics class and got libertarian as a result.... So obviously I know they have differences, but how different are they? And anyone know why the majority of my school has to be liberal? I don't receive that! Is it because of how involved the government is in schooling? Are their views being persuaded? Please no rantings about how stupid my views are, because honestly, I don't care about how we differ. You're not going to persuade me to think the same because after every, I am a VERY stubborn girl :) tehabwa, I actually do agree with you! Sorry I think I came off as uncaring.... But I meant to say that not every people just selfishly want the money, but sometimes it is the case. You did have a very good answer. And trust me, my family has been through extremely rough times before, to the point where we had to move to be able to pay for a place to live. So I understand where you're coming from.

Open Question: What is the problem with some Aries ( i am a Sagittarius )?

Ok, this is the situation. Every since one of my old friends introduced his lover to me its been a problem. My pal ( a GEMINI ) and his lover (a Aries ) started dating and i noticed that me and my pal (gemini) got extremely distant. Well over a period of time his lover ( the aries ) decides to hit me up on yahoo, and we would have random conversations. Well to make a long story short, me and the gemini isnt pal anymore and i honestly feel its because of the aries and the gemini need for a lover and attention. He have every this new confidence and its only because he have a lover ( the aries), which i have personally seen down him as a person, and try and move him away from his very dreams. BUT the gemini refuses to break up or even move on, they have even been abusive. What guide to our friendship ending was the fact that his lover started to try and talk to me on a relationship level. And i wasnt havent it. So i confronted my pal about it ( the gemini) and some how it was my fault. So thats over with. But as far as the Aries, even when i run into him today its always odd questions that he ask. Most of them are about my finances, business, who bought me this, how can i afford that,....etc. Its irritating as hell. Its negative and extremely bytch like. So last week, i was out to dinner with my friends and my OLD pal ( the gemini) and his Lover ( the Aries ) was there. They decided to arrive and sit with us. I didnt care, but the look on my old pal face was priceless, he looked either pissed at something or just irritated in general. So once again, the lover ( Aries ) started a conversation about himself some how...and i started to text on my phone, so he got louder, and i looked up like dude....wtf we are in a restaurant. One of my friends changed the subject towards who ordered what ( we was at TGI Fridays ). After about 5 minutes of conversation, the Aries once again pointed out things that he once into, and then tried to point out his age which is older and that he is becoming more accomplished, I told him that it was great that he was following his dreams. So then he started to ATTEMPT to point out and give me advice on things along with asking me more questions about my finances, business and new ventures i was getting into. I completely ignored him and it pissed him off and i changed the subject. What the fuck kinda of Aries is this PLEASE....someone tell me what is going on here???????????????? (Jensen) The gemini and I aren't friends anymore basically because he take his lover sign over mine. Even though, i always have given him positive insight on anything he needed. But when it arrive to dating he just can't help but to fall weak to his lovers. The Aries (his lover) on the other hand, want to remain my pal, but he always find ways to receive into my finances and what I am doing, and who i am seeing. I dislike that alot. It honestly feel like he want to compete with me as a person but he and I both know that he can't. I am extremely outgoing and humble. And he pushes things on people to try and find out information. Its extremely irritating and childish. He down people it seems to make himself look better, or down everyone elses success or situations to make himself the middle of attention when i don't have to do that. (Matthew Teti) Thank you for that. I am trying to look both sides of the picture here, I don't want to receive big headed, but i honestly feel the same way about what you are saying. I feel that not only if i stay remain the aries pal that it could receive worst, but i feel that i honestly cant trust him as a person. He seem to be up to something always. I mean how does my finances and business always seem to catch his eye, even though he swear i am younger then him....etc. Its like he want to know how i am becoming successful, and want to possibly steal ideas in the process. And as far as the Gemini, its a lost call. I have been friends with 2 geminis that just receive crazy when they date people. They will treat everyone around them like shyt until they need them again. Which isn't chilly for a pal. FYI, i told this pal his lover tried to talked to me, even showed him the evidence, and he still remained lovers and even more distant from me. Its chilly though. Because that is a weakness. (ELENA).....i havent been in close contact with them for about 2 years. but the Aries always find ways to keep in touch....the TGI Fridays ordeal was out of the blue. I was there with another group of friends when they came to sit with us. I am not the gemini's pal at every anymore, and he lover want to stay friends...but i still keep my distance.... (@GAMER) well honestly the one reason i asked....was because "ARIES" have a flaw sometimes of being envious, jealous and controlling....you may not have known that or just don't want to admit it. But its true sometimes....sorry

Safari 5.0.1 update fixes black Mail backgrounds, autofill, and more

Apple has released an update to Safari 5, which addresses a number of issues with the initial release, including the problem with black backgrounds appearing when generating mail attachments with scripts, and the potential security vulnerability with autofill that was recently uncovered. In addition, the program has a built-in link to Apple's new extensions gallery for people to download and install extensions.

The update is a 47MB download and is available through Software Update or as a standalone installer from the following web page:

Safari 5.0.1

In addition to the black background bug (which Apple mentions again in this knowledgebase article), Apple has fixed the recent autofill bug that posed a security threat for websites that could automatically receive personal information from the user's address book, so if you have turned off autofill because of previous reports, you can turn it back on after applying the 5.0.1 update. Other security fixes in this update are listed in this security bulletin regarding the update.

In addition to the security fixes, Apple addressed compatibility issues with various websites including RollingStone.com, Facebook.com, and Crateandbarrel.com when using Safari Reader, Flash, and when performing other functions like printing.

The Extensions gallery is quite intuitive, and installing extensions is as easy as browsing for them and then clicking the "Install" button. Once clicked, the extension will appear in the Safari toolbar immediately and be ready for use. While extensions can easily be installed through the gallery, the only way to manage and remove them is through the Safari preferences section for the extensions.

A full list of the changes in this update are the following:

New Features:

  1. Customize Safari with features created by third-party developers Find extensions in the Safari Extensions Gallery, accessible from the Safari menu and extensions.apple.com

Fixes:

  1. More accurate Top Hit results in the Address Field

  2. More accurate timing for CSS animations

  3. Better stability when using the Safari Reader keyboard shortcut

  4. Better stability when scrolling through MobileMe Mail

  5. Fixes display of multipage articles from www.rollingstone.com in Safari Reader

  6. Fixes an issue that prevented Google Wave and other websites using JavaScript encryption libraries from working correctly on 32-bit systems

  7. Fixes an issue that prevented Safari from launching on Leopard systems with network home directories

  8. Fixes an issue that could cause borders on YouTube thumbnails to disappear when hovering over the thumbnail image

  9. Fixes an issue that could cause Flash content to overlap with other content on www.facebook.com, www.crateandbarrel.com, and other sites when using Flash 10.1

  10. Fixes an issue that prevented boarding passes from www.aa.com from printing correctly

  11. Fixes an issue that could cause DNS prefetching requests to overburden certain routers

  12. Fixes an issue that could cause VoiceOver to misidentify elements of webpages

  13. For detailed information on the security content of this update, please visit this site: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222

Apple has also released Safari 4.1.1 for Tiger users, which fixes similar problems and can be downloaded via Software Update or from this web page.

Apple releases Safari Extensions Gallery

Apple Safari

Apple on Wednesday updated its Safari Web browser, turning on extensions and introducing the Safari Extensions Gallery.

Safari 5 was introduced in June, but the extension functionality was designed for developers, not the general public. This gave developers a chance to create extensions for the browser before Apple officially launched the feature.

Extensions are created using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3, a few of Apple's favorite technologies for building Web apps.

The Safari Extensions Gallery in Safari 5.0.1 is a repository in which users can quickly find and add extensions to the Safari browser. According to Apple, users can "add powerful new features to Safari, from toolbars that display live web feeds to sophisticated programs that filter web content."

Apple says that every Safari Extensions are sandboxed, which means they can't access information on a user's system or communicate with other unintended Web sites.

The Safari Extensions Gallery has extensions from Amazon, Bing, MLB.com, The New York Times, and Twitter, among others.

Safari 5.0.1 is available as a free download from Apple's Web site.

Talk to text with two free iPhone dictation apps

In the battle between iPhone and Android, one of several things Android users can hang over the heads of their iPhone-toting brethren is the built-in talk-to-text capability. Luckily, owners of the Apple device can easily retort, "Well, there's an app for that!" In fact, there are several dictation programs available. Better yet, the two I've outlined below are free (for the most part).

Dragon Dictation

Dragon Dictation: This completely free app--which is compatible with any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running OS 3.1 or later--is simpler in function than the other offering here. However, a new version was released just last week, adding several features that make it a compelling option. Namely, you can now glue your recently recorded text directly into the iPhone SMS client, and there's also an option to submit text to social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

Taking down a text is as simple as opening the app, hitting a record button, verifying the text, and pulling up a menu to submit it to the client of your choosing, be it SMS, e-mail, or one of the aforementioned social sites. If the text isn't quite right, there's a keyboard that you can tug up for editing, though I was impressed by the performance of the dictation detector during testing. It had about 85 percent accuracy--not bad for a free program. My only real complaint is that you can't use it within an existing text conversation.

Vlingo

Vlingo: Vlingo is a bit more handy--and advanced--than Dragon Dictation. However, in order to take advantage of two of the most useful features, you'll have to pay for it. The app includes free talk to text for Web search, social sites, maps, and voice dialing. But if you want to activate the features for SMS or e-mail, a fee is required: $6.99 each for either texting or e-mail, or $9.99 for both. Still, it may be worth it for some users.

Vlingo is neat in that it recognizes certain voice commands, so that instead of dictating and then pulling up a menu to designate where your text is going, you simply command "Twitter update" or "text," followed by the communication you want. This completely removes the need to fuss with your phone from the equation, which should really be the ultimate goal for any dictation app. Vlingo also offered good accuracy during testing.

Hands-on: Let's Golf 2 for iPhone

One of the first games I downloaded when I got my iPhone 3G was Let's Golf and I couldn't believe how good it looked on the tiny iPhone screen. I was a big fan of Hot Shots golf on PlayStation 2, the console game that Let's Golf seems to be largely based upon, so seeing the familiar graphics and gameplay on the iPhone screen was truly a delight.

About a week ago Gameloft released Let's Golf 2 ($4.99), and it is even more beautiful graphically (optimized for the iPhone 4's Retina display) and adds to the already solid gameplay of the original. The cartoon-like graphics are more detailed in the sequel and you receive more of everything that was good about the original--more golfers to unlock, new courses to play on, and extra features to keep the game interesting.

Let's Golf 2

You receive an aerial view of each hole before you take your first shot so plan accordingly.

(Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)

Let's Golf 2 comes with 108 holes to play across six uniquely designed courses, every in dramatic settings. The courses every have their possess specific feel, with features like Aztec temples, forest landscapes, snow-covered vistas, and even a Safari-themed course that lets you play rounds in Kenya. But the scenery isn't the only reason you should plunk down $4.99 for this golf game.

In Let's Golf 2, you now have six golfers to pick from (once they are unlocked in career mode), each with a unique ability that becomes available once you make several successful shots in a row. The default character, Vincent, lets you add extra power to a shot once you've filled up the skill meter, for example. Depending on the setting and what hole you're playing, this means you might be able to reach the green in less shots than you would otherwise. The skill for the character named Chris lets you reduce wind speed to zero, which might make an otherwise very difficult shot in strong winds a much easier undertaking.

Let's Golf 2

Customize your character with different outfits, hairstyles, and golf balls to adjust skill points.

(Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)

The game mechanics are mostly the same as the original: aim your shot by tapping the left or right side of the touch screen; tap once to start your shot; tap again when you reach your desired power; then tap again to hit the ball cleanly (it's much easier than it sounds). But in Let's Golf 2, the designers have reworked the stroke interface to make it a bit easier to receive a good shot off and the character-based special skill will help to make your shots even better.

In addition to the character-specific skill upgrades, there are now several more outfits to unlock, each giving you tiny bonus skills like shot power, accuracy, recovery (better shots from traps), and putting. This means that with the right outfit, hairstyle, sunglasses, and special ball, you can customize a character that's perfect for the challenges of a specific course.

Let's Golf 2

Once the meter is full, hitting the character icon in the upper left activates his special skill (which is followed by an animation).

(Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)

To round out the feature set, Let's Golf 2 gives you options to play against your friends over shared Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or an online mode through Gameloft Live. The first two modes worked fine in my testing, but I was never able to find a game in Gameloft Live so perhaps the company is still working out a few kinks. Aside from that issue, in every other way, Let's Golf 2 is a very polished arcade golf game, with plenty of replay value across the many courses and character choices. For more variation, you also can play the Challenge mode that lets you compete in situational minigames--such as longest putt competitions or "Birdie or bust" holes--for better equipment.

Let's Golf 2

Beautiful courses (like Her Majesty's Course in England) offer unique challenges to tackle.

(Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)

Overall, if you liked the original Let's Golf, Let's Golf 2 adds optimized graphics, more courses, more characters with unique skills, and enough features to make it worth the $4.99 price tag. Even if you never played the original, this game will be fun for any golf fan. If the company gets the online component working, maybe I'll look you on the course!

Start My Day lets you be lazy, but needs to stop slacking

(Credit: Screenshot by Polina Polishchuk/CNET)

If you are like me, you have trouble pouring a cup of water in the morning, let alone hastily navigating through what seems like an endless stream of computer programs and sites. Start My Day is a desktop application that is supposed to clear your computer's morning fog by opening your selected favorite programs, Web sites, and music simultaneously. Though its main function is useful, the program has multiple bugs that make it less than satisfactory.

Once SMD is open, two messages will pop up before the application is visible. The first states that the "publisher cannot be verified," which you can pick not to look again, and the other message reads, "unhandled exception has occurred in your application." You can disregard this curious message by clicking "continue." To add programs, Web sites, and music for SMD to run simultaneously, simply click on the respective tab and select "add." When you want to run the programs, click "run every." Before they start, a message will appear saying "cannot start processes," even though they start moments after.

The program is extremely intuitive, but it has problems with some of its attributes. A function that would have been useful is the option to set an alarm for SMD to start running. This does not work. However, there is an option to run SMD upon computer start-up.

If or when the publishers decide to fix the over glitches, Start My Day will be extremely useful. For now, the option to run multiple programs at the same time is handy, but the random messages are frustrating.

Safari still crashing after update?

A number of people have complained about Safari often crashing on their systems. While Apple's latest Safari update (5.0.1) is supposed to address some stability issues with the program,  a number of people are complaining of crashes. Here are some things you can try to hopefully clear these problems.

General maintenance
There are some general maintenance routines you can run both on Safari and on the system to help clear problems. In Safari, try clearing cookies and caches, among other items in the "Reset Safari" option in the Safari menu. You can also run general maintenance on your system to clear user account and system caches that could be contributing to the problem.

Adobe Flash
Since installing Safari 5, I have had numerous crashes that were Flash-related. You can look this when Flash and Adobe are referenced among the functions being run in the crashed thread in the accident report.

Try removing Flash from the /Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder to look if that helps. After that, if you need Flash, you can install the latest version from Adobe's Web site.

You may also benefit from using a Flash-blocking utility such as Click2Flash that will disable Flash components on Web pages unless you specifically enable them.

In addition to flash, if you have other plug-ins that you've installed, you might try uninstalling or updating them. Be sure they have been tested with your version of Safari before ruling them out as a cause for the crashes, and also be sure to manually troubleshoot them (remove them one-by-one and relaunch and test Safari each time you do this).

Input  managers
Third-party input managers--Saft, Inquisitor, PithHelmet, SafariStand, and so on--can also cause crashes in Safari. Try either updating them or removing them from the system. They should be located in one of the following folders, but you should use an uninstaller if one is available.

/username/Library/Input Managers

/Macintosh HD/Library/Input Managers

/Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support

A commonly used input manager is SIMBL, which may load numerous plug-ins that may also be contributing to the crashes, so be sure to test them as well. We recently wrote an article on managing SIMBL with Safari 5.0.

Clear preferences
In addition to using Safari's "Reset" feature, you may be having problems a corrupt Safari's preferences file. Locate the file "com.apple.Safari.plist" in the /username/Library/Preferences/ folder and remove it. When you relaunch Safari, it will recreate the file. (Keep in mind custom settings in Safari's preferences will be reverted to default after doing this).

Google licensing changes could cap Android piracy

Android logo (Credit: CNET)

While it's easy slinging arrows at Apple for its closed and tightly-controlled iPhone App Store, there's something to be said for its security.

Google's Android operating system has long faced more complicated concerns with its much freer application approval process, its openness to side-loaded apps (installing apps via APK files that you receive through some source other than the Android Market), plus having users root the platform to take control over certain internal system processes.

The "unauthorized" use of apps was a concern that application developers repeatedly brought to Google's attention, the company said in a blog post. Copying the app to the SD card and then demanding a refund is only one method of abuse, though developers have likely seen them every.

In this mobile climate, the platform with the most or most popular apps can highly influence user perceptions, if not outright sway a person's decision about which smartphone to buy. It's therefore in the best interests of both Google and the developers to provide a more surefire method for protecting paid Market content, to ensure that developers receive paid and want to continue supporting Android.

Enter Google's new licensing service, which Google hopes to phase in as a replacement for the current copy-protection scheme "over the next few months." The new mechanism runs in real-time, with a server receiving requests to verify that an app was legitimately purchased through the Android Market. (Developers can check out more of the technical specifics here.)

There are still outstanding questions that will either be addressed by Google, or by consumers' usage over time, like how the the verification process might hinder user flow (Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage comes to mind).

Joining the new copy-protection program is free for developers of paid applications running on Android 1.5 and up, though developers will have to use a tad more elbow grease in preparing their code. In addition, the new license server, which is operational now, won't be able to retroactively verify the premium apps already in the Android Market. It will, however, be able to weigh in on participating developers' apps going forward.

Are family tracking apps a good idea?

Family Tracker lets you keep tabs on iPhone-packing family members--or just your possess iPhone.

Family Tracker lets you keep tabs on iPhone-packing family members--or just your possess iPhone.

(Credit: LogSat Software LLC)

Like iHound before it, Family Tracker was a fairly useless iPhone app until iOS 4 and multitasking came along. Now the app offers a fairly effective way for you to keep tabs on iPhone-carrying family members.

The question is, should you?

Family Tracker works much like the locator services carriers such as AT&T and Verizon have offered for years. In a nutshell, the app transmits GPS location data from the iPhone. Anyone you authorize can monitor the phone's location via a Web browser or another iPhone.

Shades of Big Brother, right? Yes and no. I can recall numerous times when my wife and kids were tardy coming home--and she wasn't answering her phone, usually because she couldn't hear it ringing. This resulted in a lot of extra worrying on my part.

If she'd had Family Tracker, I could have fired up my Web browser and seen that they were on their way home, not overturned in a ditch.

And what parent wouldn't relax easier knowing a bit more about the whereabouts of their kids? Especially kids who have to receive themselves home from school, who borrow the car, who are out tardy with friends, and so on.

But do apps like this represent an invasion of privacy? A few months back, I was running every over town to plan a surprise party for the missus. What if she'd been monitoring my location? At the very least she'd have been suspicious, and at worst it would have blown the surprise. Let's face it: sometimes you want to keep a low profile, even when family is involved.

This gray area is definitely open for debate, but one thing is certain: Family Tracker is an awesome deal. You pay only a one-time fee of $3.99 for the app.

Verizon's Family Locator service, in comparison, costs $9.99 per month, while AT&T's similar FamilyMap adds a whopping $14.99 to your monthly tab. (To be fair, both carriers' services offer a few features not found in Family Tracker, such as automated arrival and departure notifications from the "trackee.")

Another perk: Family Tracker pulls double duty as a lost-iPhone locator. That's because it works much like the aforementioned iHound, pinpointing your phone's location on a map. However, there are some battery-life concerns, so be sure to read the product description and user comments before buying in.

And let's hear your thoughts on the whole concept of apps like this. Are they a good idea? An invasion of privacy? A little of both?

Muzix brings queuing to iPhone and iPod Touch

Muzix is a music jukebox application for the iPhone and the iPod Touch that is centered around on-the-go playback queue creation, a feature not offered by the onboard player. The free app offers a reasonable amount of functionality and a fun way to interact with your music, but the interface isn't the most intuitive we've arrive across. Still, for those who loathe iTunes but adore making playlists, Muzix is worth checking out.

Muzix for iPhone

The playback screen is pictured on the left, and the track listing screen on the right.

Before you receive started with Muzix, you should know that the experience is more visually thrilling if every of your music has album art attached. The track-listing pages, which are organized in alphabetical order, are tiny tiles represented by album art. Depending on how much music you elect to add from your library (an action done directly on the device), you may have an overwhelming number of pages. every songs are listed individually as opposed to by album or artist. On the one hand, this makes sense with Muzix's focus as an on-the-fly queue creator. However, flipping through a ton of pages can become tiresome, so it would be nice to look the app streamlined in a future release.

The other issue we had with the interface is that it's not immediately intuitive, and the function buttons on the playback page aren't terribly clear. That said, adding songs to the now-playing queue is as simple as clicking a tune icon. In addition to play/pause and track shuttle soft keys, the playback screen features a variety of buttons on the top, including one for deleting tracks from the list and one for turning on repeat. The others are harder to explain because of the aforementioned clarity issue. For example, one icon is a head and shoulders outline, which flips the page to full-screen album art--that doesn't make a ton of sense to us.

Although Muzix could use some improvement to the interface, it performs well, and it adds a useful feature to the iPhone for those who want to create playlists on-the-fly. As long as it remains free, it's worth a look.
