Should I have enrolled in Northwestern University right out of high school? I graduated several years ago and I say 'No.' Here's why: 1) I was not ready to treat it like a full-time job. In Europe, people often take a year off between high school and college. I think I would have benefited from that. For that matter, I was not ready to prepare for a career. I didn't really know how jobs I was interested in worked and I was too burnt out and beaten down from the college admissions process and my dissatisfaction with college to find out. The few times I did reach out for advice, the Northwestern Career middle told me they only really knew how to receive jobs in consulting, finance, and technology. I don't place the blame entirely on any one institution or person. I'm just trying to describe why I think I had a bad experience. Many of my friends feel the same way and I want this to be a guide for high school students. 2) It turned out not to have the major I wanted. Going in, I thought I wanted to do political science or business, but I soon realized that undergraduate poli sci lacked the rigor and sophistication I was looking for. As for business, NU does not allow undergraduates to major in it (although they have begun allowing them to take classes in it recently). You could make a strong argument that I wouldn't have liked most majors at most colleges, even some in public policy and business. Designing a course sequence is an incredibly complex and ever-changing task and it's simply not given much priority or support at Northwestern or most schools, at least for undergraduates. Excluding the difficult sciences, engineering, math, and statistics, most traditional majors do not tutor students how to be sophisticated, rigorous thinkers and practitioners. You could make a further argument that the problem with, for example, the undergraduate English curriculum is that it not structured logically (or at every for the most part). Instead of learning the tools of analysis, you learn the facts of the discipline. Instead of starting the major with a set of required, standardized introductions to critical theory, you can take basically any lower-level class you want. Eventually you might have to take an introduction to one genre of literature, but these classes are not structured based on any nice of systematic, evidence-based research on what students need to know to become better critics, but rather on what the sparsely-trained instructor feels is important. Sometimes they can do a good job, but I believe they could do a better job if they had a body of evidence and a forum for collaboration, and if course structure were open to the public. arrive to think of it, Northwestern never posted a single course syllabus for an undergraduate class on any the course selection website or anywhere that I looked. Looking back, there's no way I would ever enroll in a school that didn't tell me exactly what I was going to do in my classes. 3) needy teaching: it's no secret, but the traditional college lecture is more apt to put people to snooze than to engage them. Part of the problem is that professors are much more heavily rewarded for their research than their teaching ability. They don't receive nearly as much training in teaching as K-12 teachers and they don't have much incentive to focus on teaching. There are other issues with the traditional classwork, but a needy environment for learning is the common result. I think a pretty good demonstration of these facts, if they weren't already well-documented by dozens of reputable publications, is that there are many subjects taught in high school that are also taught in college. Therefore, it follows that a high school teacher is capable of teaching, for example, calculus at a college level. I took it in high school and Northwestern gave me credit for that in the form of placing me out of introductory calculus. Another demonstration is that high school teachers do in fact sometimes tutor at universities, including Northwestern. One of my better English classes was taught by a local high school teacher. My point is: why do we assume that for most classes you need a PhD to tutor? Yes, the knowledge in these classes can be incredibly specialized and so few people know the material, but that's just not true for many classes, like my English class. If professors at prestigious schools are not good teachers but are good researchers, let's let them research full-time and train those who are good teachers but not great researchers to be full-time teachers. 4) I didn't want to live in Chicago. For a major city, it's fine, but I never wanted to stay there after college, which is what many NU grads do. I would've gone to Northwestern if it were on top of Mt. Everest when I was a high schooler. I don't like the icy and I still wanted to go there. I don't care that much about upscale nightclubs or expensive dining. And it takes a long time to

A fellow was ordered to lose 75 pounds, due to VERY serious health risks. As he wondered how in the heck he would ever do it, he ran across an ad in the newspaper for a guaranteed weight loss program. "Guaranteed my ass", he thought to himself, but desperate, he calls them up and subscribes to the 3 day 10 pound weight loss program. The next day there is a knock at his door and when he answers, there stands before him a voluptous, athletic, beautiful babe dressed in nothing but a pair of running shoes and a sign around her neck. She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company. The sign reads, "If you can catch me you can have me!" Without a second thought he takes off after her. A few miles later, huffing and puffing, he finally catches her and has his way with her. After they are through and she leaves, he thinks to himself, "I like the way this company does business." The same girl shows up for the next two days and the same thing happens. On the fourth day he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost ten pounds, as promised. So, he calls the company and orders from them their 5 day/ 20 pound program. As expected, the next day there's a knock at the door and there stands the most stunningly beautiful, sexy lady he has ever seen in his life, wearing nothing but running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, "If you can catch me, you can have me." He's after her in a shot. This girl is in great shape and it takes a while to catch her, but when he does, it's worth every cramp and wheeze. She is by far the best he's ever had. For the next four days, the same routine happens and much to his delight on the fifth day, he weighs himself and found he has lost another twenty pounds as promised! He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7 day/50 pound loss program. "Are you sure," asks the representative on the phone, "this is our most rigorous program..." "Absolutely," he replies. "I haven't felt this great in years!" The next day there is a knock at the door and when he opens it he finds Richard Simmons standing there wearing nothing but pink racing spikes and a sign around his neck that reads, "If I catch you, I can have you!"

In a significant message to the business lobby in Washington, the Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod to the Civil Nuclear Liability Bill.(20 november 2009) The bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament's Winter Session by the Ministry of Atomic Energy. http://news.rediff.com/report/2009/nov/20/cabinet-approves-civil-nuclear-liability-bill.htm The bill is designed to shield foreign-reactor builders from the weight of the financial consequences of severe accidents. It shifts the primary burden for accident liability from the foreign builders to the Indian state. The bill is said to cap total compensation payable in the event of a severe radioactive release at Rs. 2,250 crore ($483 million), with the liability of the foreign supplier restricted to a trifling Rs. 300 crore ($64.6 million). Why should a needy country like India assume liability from a ridiculously low threshold? In fact, to cover claims of personal injury and property damage in the event of a catastrophic nuclear accident, India — given the density of its population and the consequent higher risks — must also maintain a big standby compensation pool, but without the state being burdened. The proposed Indian cap is well below international levels. Japan, for example, has boosted its plant operator liability to120 billion yen ($1.33 billion). below the OECD’s 2004-amended Paris Convention, total liability was set at €1.5 billion ($2.04 billion), with the operator’s share being nearly half. Germany, for its part, has unlimited operator liability and demands € 2.5 billion ($3.4 billion) security from each plant’s operator. http://chellaney.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!4913C7C8A2EA4A30!1160.entry States with a majority of the world’s gift 436 nuclear power reactors are not yet party to any international liability convention. Many countries still maintain a “wait and look” approach. For example, China, Japan and the U.S. are not party to any international liability convention, while Russia — a party to the Vienna Convention since 2005 — has refused to pass legislation to waive or cap accident liability for its foreign suppliers. When a number of nuclear-generating countries are yet to adopt domestic legislation in this field, let alone ratify international conventions, why is New Delhi in a rush to pass a bill that caps liability on terms weighted in favour of foreign suppliers? Also did we forget the experience of Bhopal gas tragedy??

I'm an American living in Japan. I want to start an American style pizzeria and sandwich/deli place in Tochigi prefecture (1.5 hours north of Tokyo). In Japan, I'm not required to have any money to actually start the business, but I'll need it for equipment, renting out a store space, and any remodeling I'll want. Also I'll need to have $30,000 in hand after three years of business to give to the government. Right now I earn about $2000 a month (200,000 yen exactly) from my current work. I want to give the Japanese authentic American style pizzas and sandwiches, which they severely lack even in Tokyo. To add to the funds, I want to start my possess deli with a variety of cheeses and cured meats (I'll try to make them myself) since I've never seen one in Japan before. I'll need equipment relating to that as well. I plan to grow my possess garden of vegetables, but of course I'll have to buy some food products too. Then I'll have to pay employees, an accountant and a lawyer. With every of this added up, how much do you estimate I'll need to actually start the business? US Dollars are ok to use for estimation.

I’ve been desperately looking for a job since December, and have been ‘interning’ as the guide of business development at a marketing firm since January. (Some background info- I’m 26, have BA, 3+ years of PA/admin experience, 1 year of marketing/PR experience.) They have offered me a package of £14k, which I basically cannot live on. I hate to walk away from an opportunity, but it’s also difficult to apply for other things as well as sneak off for interviews while I’m working. It’s also nice to tell potential employers that I am available to start immediately. Am I crazy to walk away from this opportunity or should I just leave and focus on finding something better?

I have been thinking about this idea for a while but thought i'd just find out if you guys thought it was a bad or good idea: I want to start my possess business, sort of like an anne summers/Virgin Vie party but for weddings. I will arrive to your home with wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, dresses for the guests, shoes, hats, hair pieces ect ect. So everyone can have a try on and a few drinks and like themselves like girlies should before a wedding :) The best part about it is every wedding dresses I will be selling will be at a fraction of the store prices. I'm hoping more like £350 for a gorgeous dress instead of the shops £1000! Let me know what you think and any ideas you wish to add. I have worked in a wedding store and modelled for wedding catalogues so do have a real interest. Let me know what you think Kirsty x I want it to be more like a boutique so I wouldn't be dragging 100 dresses around with me. Would just be a selection, id find out what colour the bride wants b4 to make it easier for the both of us. Maybe this would appeal to someone thats not on a big budget??

I'm looking for a home to purchase, so I've been working with a real estate agent since February. Two years ago, I worked with him for a couple months before deciding I wasn't ready to purchase a home. I currently have an offer pending on a short sale property, but have continued to look for non-short sale properties to look if something better (and quicker) popped up. I saw a home I liked at the very beginning of my search, but since I found the short sale property that same day, I decided not to make an offer. Two weeks ago, I told him I changed my mind and did want to make an offer on it, especially since it was move in ready and a normal listing. He then told me that the company listing it had gone out of business, and that it should pop up on the MLS again within a couple days. It was still popping up below the original listing, which was by a different agency than the one he was talking about that went out of business. Also, he kept saying it was a short sale, when I know for a fact it was a normal listing. I'm pretty sure he was talking about a different home listed on the same road. I continued to ask about it every couple days, and then yesterday he told me it was still available and we could go look it again today. Then today, he told me an offer was accepted on it last night. Seriously, this is one of the only normal listings in my area, and I nice of feel like I just have gotten screwed out of being able to receive the $8k home buyer's tax credit. Should I look for a new agent? He's shown me probably 50+ houses, but I still feel like this is bull. I didn't sign any nice of agreement with him this time around, although we do still have that short sale offer floating around on someone's desk somewhere. Would I have any legal ramifications?

Specifically, are there advantages to opening a Brokerage account in your business name for tax planning, as opposed to simply drawing the money out and investing it personally? I don't look too much difference, as the Sole Proprietorship and the owner are treated as the same entity for tax and liability purposes.

Suzie was born inside our home and has never in her life used the litter box. We tried to train her, regardless of every our tactics and the tips we received from vets and advice websites, nothing ever worked. She's 4 years old, has went to the vet and got a clear bill of health, she's been spayed, but she constantly urinates and poops every over the living room. She likes to go outside, and we let her, but she will NOT do her business outside. She'll scratch at the door to arrive in and once she does, she soils the living room carpet and then wants to go back outside to play some more. We tried leaving her outside, but she'll hold it in until she's sick if we don't just let her in and clean up after she's done. The horrible thing of the matter is that most of our other cats are following in her pawprints and the home is becoming nearly uninhabitable. The difference is that the other cats aren't inhibited by which room they go in though. From bedrooms, to dirty laundry, kitchen counters, appliances, the dining room table. They'll urinate EVERYWHERE, but they WILL poop in the litter box, which is one up on Suzie. We adore our cats and the majority are already fixed and those that aren't are going to be very soon. We keep the litter boxes clean and it's odd how they'll poop in the litter box but urinate everywhere else. So I need two pieces of advice. 1- What can I do to cease them from soiling the carpets, counters, and pretty much everywhere. They're not normal, they LIKE the odor of oranges and lemons, even vinegar!, so those kinds of deterrents don't work O_O... 2- What can I do to receive rid of the odor. I know apple cider vinegar is great for clothes, sheets, and such, but the carpet is so rancid and we really can't afford nor do we have the man power to tug it up or change it. I'm DESPERATE on getting rid of the odor and odors. It's stifling! About us: We live in the country with numerous indoor cats. My dad is a stroke patient and we recently lost our beloved dog Jack. We're every attached to these cats and can't bare to toss them away. Yes money is tight at the moment, but we're getting by and you can't replace adore. There are dangerous animals that lurk in the woods around our home at night, so we don't allow any of them to stay outside unless it's during the day and we're home, in which case they always stay around the back patio anyway. I really don't know what to do anymore to receive them trained and cease making our home to unpleasant. Most people who used to visit has even stopped coming because of the odor that just won't go away. I completely appreciate any and every advice that can help make our home a home again and put our felines back to being behaved pets.

Because, ideas are just ideas until people use them. Unfortunately, every too many people do use them, as seen in hip hop artists and many other mainstream music groups and artists. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S24YhXmM77k&feature=channel Notice Bob Dylan admitting he made a deal. Google Robert Johnson deal with the devil, he is often credited (not by me) with starting the whole satanism-in-music business - which so many have followed. Hold the phone jez, so you're just going to dismiss something completely, without acknowledging that so many artists are using the same satanic symbolism and phraseology. You have to admit there's some striking similarities in many of the most successful musicians. They often describe feeling like gods when they are on stage. It's too common to simply dismiss as fictitious or random coincidence. Same thing for callum, how can you dismiss this as simply lacking in reality. I'm sure you are drawn in to this music as are most people. Ever wonder why? Is that reason lacking in reality too or are you just so completely oblivious to what goes on around you that you willingly walk somnolently through your life without noticing people and what they believe, and how it affects you? Some people are conditioned to be like teflon - nothing ever sticks, they just don't receive the message - only the format (how it is delivered). BP - that's an elemental example. arrive on people, dig a little deeper than the first thing that pops into your head. I know it isn't an easy question, that's why I asked it.

My boss has repeatedly called me a "@#$%ing idiot" has said "are you stupid?" screamed at me and everyone who works there. Accused people of doing things that he himself did. I'm 24 years old I've worked at this place almost a year I know everything about this store I'm not an idiot. They have refused to pay me overtime when I worked 100 hours in a two week span. They have made me work register when I told them I wasn't good at math and didn't want to. (I have a learning disability and am not good at math) When My register was short told me that they would sue me for it. He had me doing something math related one day and when I asked him a question looked at my like I was an idiot. I said "Well I have a learning disability so I have a difficult time understanding this" his response? "I Don't give a shit what you have just figure it out" the list goes on and on. Before anyone responds I want to point out that This business Is run by a two gay-men. Most of the people who work here are gay except for three girls including myself of which are straight. They are rude to every of us girls ,but not to the guys. I don't think it has anything to do with our orientation ,but that fact that we are women. There is also a Girl who is a Lesbian that works at my job and she as well is constantly yelled at and treated poorly. They also do not give you a employee handbook when you receive hired and do not ask you to sign anything. 1. The employees upon hiring are not told the rules and regulations. (so when you don't know that you must follow every customer around the store like a criminal or that every purse and bag should be checked in they yell at you and right you up) 2. you are never asked to sign a employee handbook or to fill out taxes. 3. This store is tiny and usually have four people working everyday in the time i've worked here (10 months) I've seen 14 people receive fired for unfair reasons. I was fired today because I was helping a customer when the store was about to close (i'm sorry ,but I think the customer should always arrive first in any situation and I'm not going to say "receive out were closing" and I think that is an unfair reason to flame someone who has been the longest sales associate there (yes really) Is anything of what they are doing illegal I really believe they are.
